The Fever Of Those Years

The Fever Of Those Years

Wayfarer

The light will find those who never stop looking, that’s what the tape sang
It’s what you meant on that day with your hair in your face when you pulled on my sleeve, when you had me stay
You were all her I was the snake but it was me who was fed that day
You sat crossed legs, showed how a look could pierce veins

We walked home our own way, with our blood on my face, a little colour to a dark shade of grey
I guess that we’ve all had those years
Where cold cuts to the bone, heat brings fevers and tears
Turn those blue eyes and off whites into handshakes and half smiles

So we can step outside to both bathe in soft light
We’ll both break from that smile
We’ll both give under the weight of the thought of losing someone so young
Before she’s old enough to even fall in love

To even realize she’s changed the lives of everyone she’s touched
As we lean on the hopes of a child
We’ve accepted the failure
Took our blood over wine

With a temperament, not so concerned with sin
It was the fever of those years that left us slack-jawed again
Take sides then we all fall this time
As life pours like smoke from a child’s eyes

Some hope, some pray, we all think twice
About what it means to live by ones side
